HISTORY: http://vampireacademy.wikia.com/wiki/Rosemarie_Hathaway
Rosemarie Hathaway and her best friend, Vasalisa Dragomir, attended St. Vladamir's Academy together. Rose was learning to be a guardian – sanctioned dhampir warriors assigned to protect the Moroi (such as Lissa) – and Lissa was there to receive a formal education as a royal among her people. Lissa possessed a rare magical specialization called spirit that could be used to heal and control others. It manifested when the Dragomir family and Rose were in a deadly car accident. Lissa was the only survivor and she used her spirit to bring Rose back from the dead. This created a psychic one-way bond between Rose and Lissa, making Rose what was known as 'Shadow-Kissed'. This bond allowed Rose to know where Lissa was at all times, her moods, her feelings and she could even use it to slip into Lissa's head and see things from her perspective as if she was experiencing them herself. As the bond was one-way, Lissa could not access Rose's thoughts in the same way, but she did learn to use it to 'talk' to Rose as she knew the dhampir always kept close tabs on her through the bond.
Being dedicated to protecting Lissa as the last Dragomir (and her best friend), when there was a threat to Lissa from inside the school, Rose took Lissa away from the protections there and kept them safe, moving and on the run for two years before the school's guardians caught them and brought them back. Returned to school, and classes, Rose caught on her missing two years of training in a few months with the help of one of the best guardians out there, Dimitri Belikov. Rose and Dimitri fell for each other during this time, but their duty to Lissa kept them apart. The threat from within the school manifested and Lissa was kidnapped by the prince of another royal family, Victor Dashkov, that had a fatal disease. He tortured Lissa (and Rose through the bond) until she agreed to heal him. Lissa was rescued and Victor captured.
As school continued and Rose's training increased, she learned that there were humans helping the Strigoi. These humans helped break wards around a house that a royal family lived in. The Strigoi had killed everyone in the house, causing an uproar in the Moroi community. As an escape over the holiday break, the students of the Academy and their families went to a Moroi owned ski resort. During this time, the Guardian network discovered that the Strigoi that attacked the family were in a nearby city. Rose was told this and told not to let anyone know, but she ended up telling her friend and fellow guardian novice, Mason, about it. Mason took another Guardian and a non-royal Moroi who supported the new movement for Moroi to fight with Guardians to the city trying to find them.
Once Rose realized what they did, and knowing it was her fault for telling them, took Christian with her when she left the resort. The two tracked the others down, thankful that they hadn't found the Strigoi nest. Rose humored them by helping them search a mall, but when she discovered some markings that made her think there were Strigoi around, she led them out. They were jumped by Strigoi on the road and captured. The Strigoi in charge of the group held them captive and tried to force one of the two Moroi to willingly choose to become Strigoi by starving them and offering up one of the three dhampirs as their victim. Rose and Christian came up with a plan to get themselves free after a few days, and they tried to escape. All of them except Rose got out into the sunlight where Strigoi couldn't go, but then Mason came back to try to save Rose. He was killed before her eyes and Rose went into something like a berserk (she could never fully remember what happened) and decapitated both Strigoi with a dull sword. She had to be physically removed from protecting Mason's body by the Guardians called in by Christian as she was hysterical and could only think about keeping 'them' away from Mason's body. These were Rose's first kills and she was given Guardian tattoos to commemorate her accomplishments.
Not long after that, the school's wards were broken and a huge Strigoi force attacked, the same day Rose and Dimitri finally gave in to their feelings for each other. Rose fought against the Strigoi, learning she could sense their proximity via nausea, and teamed up with Lissa's fire-wielding boyfriend, Christian Ozera. Moroi fighting alongside Guardians was taboo as the Moroi felt their magic should only be used to better the earth, but the two made a deadly team and demonstrated how effective it can be. The Strigoi were driven off as sunrise approached, but they had taken captives with them. A rescue mission was put together once the cavern system a mile outside the school grounds was determined to be the hiding place of the Strigoi, and several fire-wielding Moroi teachers went with the Guardians seeing how effective Rose and Christian had been.
The rescue mission was brutal and there were many losses on both sides. The most important loss, to Rose, was Dimitri. As they were trying to escape, Dimitri was taken down by a Strigoi and bitten. Rose was pulled away by other Guardians when she tried to run to him. Grieving and inconsolable over the loss of her lover, the school had to wait until daytime to recover the bodies. And that was when the worst thing happened, as far as Rose was concerned; Dimitri's body wasn't there. He'd been turned into a Strigoi. Knowing his wishes and wanting revenge, upon her eighteenth birthday, Rose withdrew from St. Vladamir's and set out for Russia – to kill Dimitri. Lissa tried to stop her, but Rose chose to go free Dimitri's soul over staying behind to finish school and protect Lissa.
Once in Russia, Rose tried to find Dimitri and failed, but managed to kill several Strigoi on her own in Moscow. She was contacted by an Alchemist – humans that had a deal with the Moroi to essentially clean up after Strigoi kills and other things in exchange for charms made from Moroi magic – named Sydney. She knew the town where Dimitri lived and took her there. Rose met Dimitri's family, told them what happened to him, and was accepted as part of the family. But she couldn't stay there. She had to find Dimitri and a man who she thought was sent by someone powerful from home influenced her to leave in exchange for saving Dimitri's sister from the life of a blood whore.
Rose headed to the biggest city in Siberia with a group of rogue dhampirs to hunt Strigoi. They didn't have her training, so she took on a leadership role and their group managed to capture many Strigoi so Rose could question them. Those that didn't have the information Rose needed were destroyed and she let the others claim the kills. Eventually, one of them knew who Dimitri was, so Rose let him go, telling him to deliver a message to Dimitri that she was looking for him. A few nights later, Dimitri showed up and Rose hesitated when she had an opening to kill him. He then captured her and held her for a week in a Strigoi compound. He tried to get her to willingly accept being turned, pretending to love her and care for her, giving her expensive jewelry and clothing. He also drank from her, making her become addicted to the chemical rush of being bitten, to keep her weak and make her pliable. She continued to refuse to turn, even under all that manipulation.
What saved Rose from her addiction was the occasional times she slipped back into Lissa's mind to check up on her. Another spirit user was forcing erratic behavior in Lissa and, in a moment of clarity, Rose realized that the man she loved was gone and that Dimitri the Strigoi didn't want her because he loved her, he looked at her like a possession that would make him stronger in Strigoi politics. She needed to get back to St. Vladamir's to save Lissa. She chose the living over the dead. Stalling long enough to clear her mind from the vampire bite addiction, Rose managed to come up with a plan and escaped from captivity and used the Strigoi's distrust of each other to make them fight amongst themselves. Dimitri survived and pursued her, deciding he would no longer turn her, but kill her. They fought on a bridge and Rose managed to stake him but failed to ensure he was destroyed when he fell from the bridge into a river. Rose then helped save Lissa through the help of a Russian spirit user and the Moroi she discovered was her father. Once back at St. Vladamir's and re-enrolled in school, a package from Russia arrived with the stake she'd used on Dimitri and a letter from him telling her that he would find her when she left school and would never be safe.
At graduation two and a half months later, Rose put up excellent Guardian exam numbers and Lissa accepted a place at Court where she could go to a prestigious college. But Rose had learned that there had once been a spirit user that somehow turned a Strigoi back into a Moroi. With the hope that Dimitri could be saved and Lissa's promise to go with Rose the next time she did something crazy like go to Russia to kill Dimitri, she needed to get that information. The problem was, the only one that had the information as to where this spirit user was located at was Victor Dashkov. So, with help, Rose broke into Tarasov, the Moroi high security prison, and broke Victor Dashkov out of prison as he would only talk if given his freedom. They met with Victor's brother in Las Vegas and learned it was possible, but it required a spirit charmed stake AND the spirit user to stake the Strigoi. Even though Lissa was willing, Rose refused to let her and wrote the whole thing off. As much as it hurt to know the possibility was there and not go through with it, protecting Lissa was more important.
Dimitri showed up in Vegas and attacked them. They got away, but in the commotion, Victor and his brother escaped, leaving the criminal on the loose and no way to track him. Back to Court they went to face their punishment, though they did manage to convince everyone that they'd been in Vegas to party, not in Alaska to break out Victor. Rose was severely punished for her role in placing Lissa in danger (as the members of Court believed), but she was also used as a political piece in a new legislature that passed, lowering the Guardian age from eighteen to sixteen. Rose lost her temper and, in the middle of Court, told the Moroi queen how terrible the new law was, what would happen and then let her mouth run saying the queen would regret it.
Lissa and Christian were captured by Dimitri while Lissa was visiting her college as bait to lure Rose to him. Rose and the Guardians at Court mounted a rescue with the bond between Rose and Lissa as their guide. In the midst of the battle, Rose engaged Dimitri in combat while Christian and Lissa took the distraction to attack Dimitri. Lissa had managed to charm a stake and, with Christian distracting Dimitri with fire, managed the impossible act of staking him. Spirit magic exploded everywhere, temporarily frying the bond, but Dimitri had been saved. Turned back into a dhampir, he was taken away and locked up, examined and questioned to determine if he truly wasn't Strigoi any longer. Dimitri refused to see Rose and, when she didn't take no for an answer, told her that being Strigoi had killed his ability to love and so he no longer loved her. He pledged his life to Lissa, but his time with Rose was over.
When the queen was assassinated, the killer framed Rose by using her stake and her lack of an alibi along with her earlier threats to the queen made her a prime suspect. She was locked up and awaiting trial after her hearing didn't go well. Her father told her that she'd never go to trial and he, along with Lissa and some other friends, broke her out of jail. Under Lissa's orders, Dimitri took Rose away from Court to protect her and keep her on the run while the others tried to find out what really happened, who the real killer was, and clear Rose's name.
PERSONALITY:
At first glance, Rose is bold, brash and impulsive. She tends to act before she thinks, going with her gut and what she believes is right, as opposed to the things she should do or what others think she could do. Rose has no problem telling people exactly what she thinks of them and has gotten into plenty of trouble by not keeping her mouth shut. Couple that with not liking being told what to do, and there's the perfect formula for issues with authority figures. In a way, Rose sees everything as a kind of battlefield – not unexpected due to her Guardian training – and if it's not a physical battle, which she greatly prefers, it's a verbal or social one. Snark is a weapon for her as well as a kind of armor. She uses it to keep those who could be a threat at bay and to cut into others in arguments, but can also soften it enough to have witty banter with others she likes as of sparring instead of attacking.
That initial impression of Rose isn't incorrect. She is all those things along with being reckless, but she has a deep-seated dedication to her ideals and to those she loves. She's spent her whole life as a dhampir being taught one thing – the Moroi come first. The idea of having a personal life, of doing the things she wanted to do, were never part of her upbringing. It makes it hard, sometimes, for Rose to balance out her own feelings and emotions with her duty to Lissa. This manifests clearly in regards to Dimitri. Despite their feelings for each other, there never could be anything because they couldn't allow themselves to be in love as it would compromise their duty to protect Lissa. Rose becomes very frustrated with it, even though she understood the logic behind it. She even agreed with the logic, despite her own feelings. Because of this, Rose was always pushing her own desires away, putting Lissa and her future before her own.
When it came to a head, upon Dimitri becoming Strigoi, Rose remembered a conversation she and Dimitri once had about Strigoi. They both had voiced that they would rather die than become Strigoi. She felt she had a duty to kill Dimitri, to put his soul to rest. It didn't matter that it was dangerous and more than likely a suicide mission; it was something she believed she had to do. And, for the first time, she chose her own wishes and feelings over Lissa's. Since Lissa was protected by the wards at St. Vladamir's, Rose left her behind to go find Dimitri. When she did find him, she hesitated in killing him because she did love him and actually seeing him as Strigoi, seeing the changes, was a shock. It cost her the momentary advantage and she was captured. During her imprisonment, Dimitri tried to convince her to willingly be made into Strigoi and his method to convince her had her end up becoming something she always despised – a blood whore.
As the bite of a Strigoi was very potent and pleasurable, Rose became addicted to the endorphin rush and essentially became a junkie. Dimitri used it as a tactic to make Rose more pliable, to muddle her higher reasoning, so she would agree to be turned. Despite all that, Rose was unwilling to give in. She refused to become Strigoi, to lose her soul and become an evil monster that killed for pleasure. And it was her connection to Lissa, her dedication to her best friend that was rooted deeper in her than anything else, that let her finally see that Dimitri wasn't the man she loved anymore and that the one person alive that she still loved, Lissa, was in desperate need of her help. That gave her the strength of will needed to get herself off the vampire bite and free herself. In that moment, she chose life over death and was able to fully attempt to kill Dimitri.
Control is always something Rose will have trouble over. She has a fiery temper and still does things regardless of the consequences, but more often than not, she does them because they are what she believes is right and not out of pettiness. There is most definitely pettiness from time to time as she struggles for control, to think before she acts, but she acknowledges her flaws. Most of the time.
FIRST PERSON SAMPLE:
Alright, I've had this on my mind for a while, so I'll just say it: This place has terrible fashion sense.
And don't any of you get all 'But Rose, there's a war going on. How can you think of things like this?' Well, let me tell you something. Nothing makes a girl feel better after cracking some heads like a little spa time with a manipedi and a nice outfit to slip into. I get that this is like Medieval Times here, so I'll overlook the rusticness of everything, but someone out there has to have the name of a good tailor among the elves that doesn't want to, you know, stab us in the faces for existing.
So... who's gonna pony up the info? Armor has a bad habit of making me not feel like a girl and that's such a crime.
THIRD PERSON SAMPLE:
A. The Frienemy
The elation at seeing him was dashed the moment Rose saw the colors he was wearing. No... No, this was so screwed up. Why did they have to be on opposite lines?
Okay, that was a stupid question since that was the way things always seemed to be for her these days. Nothing was how she wanted it, but she did know one thing – helping these dragons save all the worlds was time better spent than on the run from Guardians while Lissa and Abe worked to clear her name. It kept her fully out of reach of the authorities back home and kept her from feeling useless. Here she was still protecting Lissa even if it was in a more grand yet vague way.
Shit. He was hurt. She couldn't tell exactly how hurt he was and wanted to go check on it. Problem was, a quick glance up told her that doing so was practically suicide. They were in the middle of a battle – an invading battle at that – and going to aid one of those invaders could and probably would be seen as treason. Aiding the enemy or letting a friend possibly die. These choices sucked.
...to hell with it. Rose had been accused of treason before and at least this time it'd be something she earned. There was some comfort in knowing the actions she was about to take were her own. If she didn't go to him, she'd be committing treason against herself. Were they really enemies? Yes, in the most immediate sense they were, but those dragon mages had made it pretty clear that the dragonsworn where there to stop this kind of thing and get the flights to work together. The alternative totally blowed. Maybe all it would take was a spark to get these retarded dragons to stop thinking with their pride and do what was right. She'd always been one to metaphorically start fires, so with steely determination, Rose ran across the battle lines with a clear plan in mind. Well, as clear as any Rose Hathaway plan ever was. The odds were once she got over there, she'd just wing the rest.
And if she died doing this... If it got even one dragon to work on stopping the demons instead of acting like royals scrambling for the throne, she wouldn't regret it. She could still feel that she died defending Lissa.
